In this 2-hour workshop, we will explore various forms that personal essay, memoir and creative nonfiction can take. We will play with different versions of our own voice and discover different pathways that we might choose to explore through writing. We will read, discuss, write and (if you'd like to) share what we've created. Whether you're ready to write your juicy tell-all memoir, are interested in bringing your own unique lens to the quotidien, or want to discuss hard-hitting global issues, this workshop will leave you with new ideas and techniques for developing your work.

Topics include: conversational storytelling, capturing a moment, writing what you love (and what you hate), research/learning through writing, learning about yourself through writing, exploring your archive, automatic writing

Adalya Nash Hussein is a writer and editor. Her work has appeared in Overland, Liminal, Meanjin, Voiceworks, Going Down Swinging and others. It has also been shortlisted for the KYD Creative Nonfiction Essay Prize and the Scribe Nonfiction Prize. In 2025, with the support of the Kat Muscat Fellowship, she founded Loom, an interdisciplinary literary journal. She has also been the Editor of Voiceworks and The Victorian Writer, Managing Editor at Australian Poetry, a Co-Editor at Liminal, and a Guest Editor of Debris Magazine and The Circular.

This event will be held in our Reading Room, which is accessed via a small spiral staircase. Please reach out if you have any accessibility concerns. Attendees get 10% off purchases day of.

The book club will be held in our reading room at 55 Peel St, West Melbourne. The reading room is accessed via a spiral staircase. If this is an accessibility issue for you, please be in touch after making your booking so we can accommodate your needs.

I can’t make it! Can I get a refund for my ticket?

Event tickets are non-refundable. However, we can issue you a store credit refund or you can pay it forward and pass the ticket along to someone on the waitlist.

If you can no longer make it to an event you’ve booked in for, please let us know so that we can give your spot to someone else!

We run a monthly book club, hold book launches and author salons, and general community events. Our reading room is also available for hire for private events.

Only about 11% of books published are by BIPOC authors — so unless you specifically seek out books by BIPOC authors, you aren't likely to find very many of them organically. At Amplify, BIPOC authors are highlighted and celebrated. Here, they don't have to fight to be seen, and you don't have to fight to find them.

We hope that in our shop, you can discover a new favourite read, find stories that speak uniquely to you, learn about a culture outside your own (or more about your own histories), and gain a better understanding of the systems that connect us all.
