BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Colour. People of Colour is basically an umbrella term for non-white, while the B & I acknowledge the different histories and oppressions that Black and Indigenous people have and continue to face. We are aware that it’s an imperfect term, but it’s the best we have to work with (for now!) to encompass the full range of the shop’s authors.
To us, representation means the ability to see yourself reflected in the media that you consume. It means being able to read stories where you recognise your own background and family structures, where you can see and hear from people who look like you, speak like you, love like you, exist like you.

Our shop is at 55 Peel St, West Melbourne. See more details about the physical shop here.
Unfortunately not! Our online and in-person inventory are the same, so if it’s out of stock online, we don’t have it. If you want an out of stock item though, pop yourself on the waitlist to let us know that you want it and we’ll work to bring it back in for you!
We don’t have a separate warehouse, so orders are primarily packed during shop hours (Thursday - Sunday).
There are two small steps leading into the shop and two steps in the shop to get to our non-fiction section. We have a ramp for those who need it, just give us a shout when you arrive and we'll help you out!
Our reading room is accessed via a small spiral staircase and there is unfortunately no lift on the premises.
There is 2P (metered) parking behind the shop on Capel st, or parking at the Queen Victoria Market.
We are right across from the 58 tram, and a short walk from the 19/57/59 trams on Elizabeth Street. The closest train station is Flagstaff.
Our books
We are a specialist bookstore that only stocks books written by BIPOC authors, stocking widely across trade fiction and non-fiction. We primarily sell adult books reaching down to the YA (13+) age range, with a limited capsule collection for younger readers.
Unfortunately we're unable to accomodate self-published titles at the moment.
Of course! Head over to The Supercut Box, where we will personally curate a selection of 3 books for you for $85. Just add it to your cart, and fill out the form at checkout.
Or — if you’re looking for a single rec, email us or message us on Instagram, and we’ll get back to you ASAP!
We can definitely try! Email us with the title you’re looking for. If it’s in print locally, we should be able to get it for you.

In line with the rest of the shop, we only sell pre-loved books by BIPOC writers. We stock titles that we sell new in our normal catalogue, and books that we don’t, all in our pre-loved collection.
The pre-loved collection often has new releases in good condition, but it’s also a treasure trove for out of print titles or imported books that never got distribution here.
Sometimes, books come to us damaged. So instead of returning them to the distributors where they’ll get pulped, we sell them at a discounted rate in our pre-Loved section. These books usually come with a dent or bend in the cover that makes them unfit for sale as new, but are perfectly fine otherwise.
Happily! Drop by the shop with books to donate, or email us with pictures if you want to double-check. You will receive a discount for any day-of purchases when you donate!
It means that the books have come to us secondhand.
If you purchased a regional book box or a Supercut box and got a book you already own, let us know and we'll swap it for you. You can either come in store or pay for shipping to swap your book.
We aim to include 2 new releases in each pack. For lesser-published regions, we go as far back as a year to ensure that you’re getting the most diverse set of books we have to offer.
We wanted to give you space to read as you please, especially if you’re like us and are a mood reader. Instead of rushing to read your monthly book, we want to make sure that you have the space (mentally and on your TBR) for your books before diving in.
Subscriptions renew at the same time on the same date every two months. So, if you ordered your first pack on the 14th of December, you will next be charged on the 14th of February.
If you purchased a one year subscription: Your subscription will not automatically renew. This means you’ll have to repurchase the pack if you'd like to continue receiving them.
If you purchased an ongoing subscription: Your subscription will keep rolling over until you cancel it.
Yes you can! If you’d like to cancel your subscription, you can do so via your customer account. If you are having issues don’t hesitate to email us and we can get it sorted for you.
If you’d like to delay a cycle, email us at info@amplifybookstore.com and we will do it for you!
Event tickets are non-refundable. However, we can issue you a store credit refund or you can pay it forward and pass the ticket along to someone on the waitlist.
If you can no longer make it to an event you’ve booked in for, please let us know so that we can give your spot to someone else!
Events are announced on our Instagram page and in our newsletter. You can find tickets here for our upcoming events.
We run a monthly book club, hold book launches and author salons, and general community events. Our reading room is also available for hire for private events.
The book itself is not included with your ticket.
Sustainability
We use HeapsGood mailers, which are home-compostable (and worm-farm safe!) and made from renewable resources.
If you don’t have a home compost bin, we suggest reusing them to send another parcel before tossing them in the bin or your local compost bin.
Our boxes are made from 80% recycled materials and sourced using responsible forestry practices. They are 100% recyclable, and can be reused!
We also reuse the boxes that books are delivered to us in to maximise their lifespan.
We use water-activated tape that is 100% recyclable, so you don’t have to rip it off before chucking our packaging in the recycling bin.
Our packing peanuts come when we receive books from some distributors. They are biodegradable; just put them in water and watch them dissolve!
Our stickers, thank you cards and bookmarks are printed with Sustainable Printing Co. They are printed with environmentally friendly ink and on 100% recycled paper.
Our physical gift cards are printed with D&D Letterpress.
Our Hex Wrap is from HeapsGood. It is 100% recyclable and compostable.
We ship domestically and internationally via AusPost, a carbon neutral shipping service. We ship from our shopfront in West Melbourne.
Amplify is a proud social enterprise and approved member of SENVIC and GoodMarket 100% of our profits are reinvested into Amplify to allow us to continue fighting for more representative publishing.
We aim to keep our packaging minimal to reduce waste. We reuse pre-consumer waste where possible, and encourage you to reuse your packaging, too!
